Cultural Red Series - Calling The Directions
Mixed Media Art Quilt
Size: 39” wide x 58 1/2 ” high
Materials: Cotton fabric, trims, applique, digital image, cotton embroidery thread, buttons
Methods: Machine and hand quilted. Hand embroidery and appliqué
Artist Statement: The Maya believe that we came from the stars and that humans are made of corn. It is prophesized that when the four colors of the human race, just like the four colors of corn: red, yellow, black and white, blend together like Indian corn on one cob, we will have reached the desired state of oneness consciousness.
Each direction is represented by a color on each of the four sides of this work. The sun and the moon and the spirit of corn are also depicted in the work. The central figure features a Two-Spirit healer in ceremony reverently calling to the directions. Special thanks to hermana Jaysa for the use of her image.
History: 2015 Santa Fe Capitol Rotunda Gallery, Santa Fe NM, 2016 Hubbard Museum of the American West, Ruidoso Downs, NM
Hanging: Each work has a sleeve on the back to hang the work. It can be hung on a wooden slat flat against the wall or on a curtain rod. After purchase I will send hanging and care information. Works can also be framed if you choose.
